Discriminant Canonical Analysis as a tool to determine traces of endangered native hen breed introgression through egg hatchability phenomics

Abstract: Objective:The main objective of this study was to develop a pipeline to detect phenogenomic introgression across different multivariety breeds and to validate such classification focusing on external egg and hatchability-related traits using a discriminant canonical analysis approach. Methods: For this, 1368 eggs belonging a flock of 94 endangered Spanish autochthonous breed breeding hens (Andalusian Tufted, Blue Andalusian, Spanish White-Faced, and Utrerana) and a control outgroup comprising 32 eggs belonging … Show more

“…By means of this tool, it will be possible to take into account all the variables considered appropriate simultaneously when distinguishing between study groups, so that we can determine the variables that contribute most to the discrimination between semen freezing treatments ( Yeater et al, 2004 ). In fact, in the area of avian reproduction, this analytical technique has previously been successfully applied ( González Ariza et al, 2022a ; Díaz Ruiz et al, 2023a ). DCA has also been used in the field of poultry production with the objectives of increasing broiler performance ( Rosario et al, 2008 ), classifying eggs of different genotypes of local breeds of hens according to egg quality traits ( González Ariza et al, 2021a ; González Ariza et al, 2022b ), and performing biometrical characterizing of local genotypes of hens ( González Ariza et al, 2021b ).…”

“…In Mexico, the indigenous domestic genotype known as ‘Guajolote’ is highly valued as a ceremonial food, consumed during family festivities, mainly in December ( 20 ). In this respect, enhancing the consumption of local breeds’ products could be a crucial strategy to preserve them ( 25 ). Most of the native poultry genotypes are threatened due to the rise of highly selected strains in the 20th century, via displacement and genetic erosion ( 2 , 26 ).…”
