Discriminant analysis of patients’ reasons for choosing or refusing treatments for partial edentulism

Abstract: The aim of the study was to explore partially edentulous patients' reasons for choosing or refusing prosthodontic treatment with removable partial dentures (RPD), fixed partial dentures (FPD) and implant partial dentures (IPD). Clinical and oral health-related quality of life measures were collected from 165 partially edentulous patients undergoing treatment. Patients' preferences were recorded and reasons for choosing or refusing treatments were measured with 32 questions using a five-point Likert scale. Desc… Show more

“…Considering the risk of pulp damage caused by tooth preparation, the use of claspretained RDP could be a reasonable alternative to double crown-retained RDP. Natural appearance and similarity to natural teeth are, however, important reasons for choosing or refusing prosthodontic treatment [32]; for this reason, double crowns with facings are advantageous for patients asking for RDP. The strengths of this study are the prospective, randomized design with two rather homogenous study groups; the fact that only two dental laboratories, with experienced and highly skilled dental technicians, were involved in prosthesis fabrication; and that all clinical evaluations were performed by calibrated dentists only.…”

“…Estudo verificou que, quanto maior o tempo com a pró-tese, maior a satisfação com a mastigação 18 . Atualmente, verifica-se que a prótese sobre implantes dentários é a que está associada à maior satisfação mastigatória 30 , porém esse procedimento ainda não é disponibilizado pelo sistema público de saúde, possivelmente por ser tratar de um tratamento de alto custo 31 .…”

“…anzeveren et al (3) conducted a longitudinal study to assess the effectiveness of oral rehabilitations using removable partial dentures (RPDs), noting these to be effective and non-deleterious to oral health. Regardless of the increasing demand for implant-based restorations, RPDs offer the advantages of avoiding the surgical risks, complexity and costs associated with implant treatments (4,5). Nevertheless, for some many years, it has been recognized that problems exist among the dental profession when prescribing, designing, and fabricating removable partial dentures (6)(7)(8)(9), despite the introduction of the European Union's "Medical Devices Directive" in 1993.…”
