Discriminant analysis of autofluorescence spectra for classification of oral lesions in vivo

Abstract: The application of LDA-LOO method on the autofluorescence spectra recorded during a clinical trial in patients was found suitable to discriminate oral mucosal alterations during tissue transformation towards malignancy with improved diagnostic accuracies.

“…In parallel, optical methods were introduced to improve the differentiation between precancerous and cancerous lesions and normal tissues . Clinical studies have been performed using macroscopic fluorescence imaging from endogenously and exogenously induced fluorophores or using spectroscopic methods . Over the last decade, confocal microscopy has been adapted to the in vivo imaging of suspicious tissues at the cellular level with probe‐based confocal laser endomicroscopy (pCLE) .…”

“…DR spectra were preprocessed to minimise interpatient variation by normalising each spectrum to its peak spectral intensity 16. A PCA was performed on the normalised spectral data of all subjects for dimensional reduction without losing much information provided by the original normalised spectral data set.…”
