Discrete element modeling of vibrating tillage tools

Abstract: Purpose -The analysis of the effect of tool vibrations on the measured and simulated draught forces of cultivator tools. This paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach -Soil bin measurements and discrete element method (DEM)-based simulations. Findings -The soil-tool interaction induced free vibrations of cultivator tools have significant impact on the measured draught force, and the simulations made by using vibrating tools give similar results. Research limitations/implications -Accurate … Show more

“…This cycle is repeated multiple times to model the bulk material's mechanical behavior. For modeling the mechanical behavior of the soil, EDEM 2.7 discrete element software has been applied as a discrete element software using “Hertz Mindlin with bonding” contact model (Keppler et al , 2015).…”

“…Starting from the values evaluated in (Keppler et al , 2015), the micromechanical parameters of the discrete element model were systematically modified, until the simulated vane shear failure curve and the measured vane shear torque curve (Figure 7) presented an acceptable similarity.…”

“…The modelling possibilities of soil-tillage interaction was already examined [1,2], which can be extended to study the effect of rocky soil on the cultivation tools. Rock crushers are often used to reclaim fields and also rock pickers for collecting stones.…”
