Discrete element modeling of rock failure dynamics

Abstract: The discrete element method is employed to study rapid failure of a test rock specimen under cylindrical tensile wave effect. The author proves the effect exerted by the mechanical characteristics of rocks and the boundary conditions of the problem on the length and shape of fractures, and compares the experimental evidence with the calculation data.

“…The efficiency of DEM in blast and wave and fracture propagation was discussed in some studies. Khan employed rapid failure of a test rock specimen under cylindrical tensile wave effect [22]. The study concluded that DEM can be efficient to solve dynamic problems of rock mechanics or to control chronologically stress-strain state (SSS) of a material.…”

(Gendler, 2014;Konovalov, 2016).…”

“…Hamiel et al [17] also study cylindrical granite specimens in order to develop an anisotropic constitutive model describing effective damaged material properties of granite. Khan [18] demonstrates that two-dimensional discrete element method can give varied fracture patterns in a disk loaded by a cylindrical tensile wave. We choose to model the effect of the blast loading by prescribing a single pressure pulse on the boundary of a cylinder concentric with the center of the explosion.…”
