Discrepancies between balance confidence and physical performance among community-dwelling Korean elders: a population-based study

Abstract: We found a discrepancy between balance confidence and physical performance according to sex and age among Koreans elders. Low balance confidence among women elders was correlated with pain-related dysfunctions other than those reflected in POMA scores. Therefore, enhancing confidence and controlling pain as a means of preventing disability should be emphasized when developing models for maintaining and promoting health in elders.

“…And psychological factors also constitute an important element of the balance control system. Research has shown that balance confidence is related to performance in many aspects of daily living (Carpenter et al 2006;Ko et al 2009) and that those with a history of falls have less confidence in their balance (Lajoie and Gallagher 2004).…”

“…This moderate relationship between the POMA-B and BBS has been shown in other studies that have assessed the validity of the POMA in diverse populations. Ko et al [25] reported a moderate to high relationship between POMA, POMA-B, POMA-G and the activities specific balance confidence scores in Korean older adults evaluated with activities specific balance confidence scale (ABC), POMA, activities of daily living (ADL), and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). Another investigation by Lin et al [26] in community-dwelling older adults demonstrated a moderate association between POMA-B and older adults' resources and services ADL scale.…”

“…This discrepancy between confidence in the ability to manage falls and observed performance during a fall risk assessment was specifically observed in a study of community-dwelling adults over 50 years old in Korea. 58 Because the FCS and FMS measure participants' perception of their ability to control falls, and not the actual function, perhaps only the perceptions of ability increase when cognitive functioning is impaired. One explanation for this discrepancy between reported perceived ability and observed ability is that people with cognitive impairments do not understand the self-report questionnaires despite the administration and clarification by researchers.…”
