Discovery of Vespasiano Bignami paintings at the National Theatre of Costa Rica through technical photography and UV–Vis spectroscopy

Abstract: Establishing and understanding large format paintings are key to provide accurate information about the artist’s palette and developing conservation strategies. Therefore, investigating the artworks of a population offers insight into its culture, history and origins which reveals individual and collective identity through cultural heritage worldwide. Particularly, the ceiling of the Foyer at the National Theatre of Costa Rica (Central America) is decorated with three large format paintings from the nineteenth… Show more

“…As the camera captors are sensitive to a 360-1100 nm range [25], an 87 Wratten Kodak© filter was used to only record the radiations from 800 to 110 nm. IRfc images are obtained transferring the red layer coming from the IR image to the RVB image [46]. This is accompanied by the blue layer removal [47].…”

“…The presence of a large number of other chemical species in the studied medium may tremendously complicate the identification of HAQ spectroscopic signature. This would be the case when one can use portable techniques like UV-induced fluorescence 16 or unilateral NMR 17 , meant for in situ and nondestructive characterization of paintings. From a bottom-up perspective, the present work aims at comparing two commercially available, ie not pure, HAQ compounds, alizarin and purpurin.…”
