Discovery of Schistosoma mekongi circulating proteins and antigens in infected mouse sera

Abstract: Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by an infection of the parasitic flatworms schistosomes. Schistosoma mekongi is a restricted Schistosoma species found near the Mekong River, mainly in southern Laos and northern Cambodia. Because there is no vaccine or effective early diagnosis available for S. mekongi, additional biomarkers are required. In this study, serum biomarkers associated with S. mekongi-infected mice were identified at 14-, 28-, 42-, and 56-days post-infection. Circulating prote… Show more

“…S. haematobium has been classified as a probable human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) [ 21 ]. S. intercalatum and S. mekongi are two species that are locally widespread, but to a lesser extent than the other species [ 22 ]. S. intercalatum is common in the Democratic Republic of Congo, while S. mekongi is common in certain areas of Cambodia and Laos [ 23 ].…”

“…Nucleic acid such as DNA of schistosomes can be released to the host’s blood circulation upon entry and during the parasite’s development [ 7 , 71 ]. Hence, the nucleic acid detection is useful in diagnosing active schistosome infection [ 25 , 59 ]. [ 55 ] likewise demonstrated that schistosome DNA can be detected in experimentally infected mice before parasite eggs are demonstrated on the feces.…”

“…Affecting approximately 250 million people worldwide, schistosomiasis has persisted as a public health concern in selected regions throughout Africa, South America, and Asia [ 17 ]. There are three known species of schistosomes affecting the Asian region: S. japonicum, S. mekongi , and S. malayensis [ 17 , 40 , 59 ]. Among the three, S. mekongi will be the focus of this review.…”
