Discovery of new Milky Way star cluster candidates in the 2MASS Point Source Catalog. II. Physical properties of the star cluster CC 01

Abstract: Abstract. Three new obscured Milky Way clusters were detected as surface density peaks in the 2MASS point source catalog during our on-going search for hidden globular clusters and massive Arches-like star clusters. One more cluster was discovered serendipitously during a visual inspection of the candidates. The first deep J, H, and K s imaging of the cluster [IBP 2002] CC 01 is presented. We estimated a cluster age of ∼1-3 Myr, distance modulus of (m − M) 0 = 12.56 ± 0.08 mag (D = 3.5 kpc), and extinction of … Show more

“…The detection of known stellar clusters will be examined, and new clusters will be searched for using a method similar to that already adopted in the study of the MW (Ivanov et al 2002;Borissova et al 2003). The analysis of stellar clusters will be centred on the study of CMDs to estimate their ages and metallicities as well as on the comparison with results obtained from optical surveys: MCPS (Zaritsky et al 2004), OGLE (Pietrzynski et al 1998(Pietrzynski et al , 1999, those by de Grijs & Anders (2006) and other dedicated studies.…”

“…to compare the Galactic open cluster systems with those of the LMC, SMC, and other extragalactic cluster populations; as well as addressing many other questions. The results presented in this paper are part of a larger program aimed at characterizing the hidden star cluster population in the Galaxy (Borissova et al 2003(Borissova et al , 2006Ivanov et al 2002Ivanov et al , 2005Ivanov et al , 2010Ivanov et al , 2011Kurtev et al 2007Kurtev et al , 2008Kurtev et al , 2009Hanson et al 2008Hanson et al , 2010Bica et al 2003;Dutra et al 2003;Longmore et al 2011). Initially, the project was based on cluster candidates identified from 2MASS (Skrutskie et al 2006) and the Spitzer Space Telescope Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE, Benjamin et al 2003) survey.…”
