Discovery of a long-lived, high-amplitude dusty infrared transient

Abstract: We report the detection of an infrared-selected transient which has lasted at least five years, first identified by a large mid-infrared and optical outburst from a faint X-ray source detected with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In this paper we rule out several scenarios for the cause of this outburst, including a classical nova, a luminous red nova, AGN flaring, a stellar merger, and intermediate luminosity optical transients, and interpret this transient as the result of a young stellar object (YSO) of at l… Show more

“…Another example use of VIRAC for constraining distance is that of Britt et al (2016), where VIRAC proper motion and parallax upper limits were used to determine that the very unusual long-duration transient source CX330 is outside the solar neighbourhood and moving too slowly to be connected to any known star forming complex, assuming an age of order 1 Myr. VIRAC kinematic distance estimates are most useful for objects known to be young and hence very likely to have space velocity consistent with disk rotation, these objects would include young objects (e.g.…”

“…This material could originate from a remnant envelope of the young star itself, or could be a quiescent part of the molecular cloud encountered by the young star after traveling a significant distance from its birthplace (e.g. Britt et al 2016). Indeed, a young star may cross its parent cluster within ∼1 Myr (Kraus et al 2008;Zari et al 2019), which is sig-nificantly less than the lifetime of the parent molecular cloud.…”

“…For example, Ratti et al (2013) found a quiescent long orbital period CV, while Hynes et al (2014) reported a candidate symbiotic X-ray binary associated with a carbon star. Britt et al (2016) identified a high-amplitude IR transient which they interpret as a young stellar object (YSO) with an accretion disk instability event, and Wevers et al (2016b) discovered a high state AM CVn (compact double WD) system. These examples illustrate the large diversity of (sometimes rare and peculiar) objects that are being discovered in the GBS.…”
