Discovery and Predictive Modeling of Urine Microbiome, Metabolite and Cytokine Biomarkers in Hospitalized Patients with Community Acquired Pneumonia

Abstract: Pneumonia is the leading cause of infectious related death costing 12 billion dollars annually in the United States alone. Despite improvements in clinical care, total mortality remains around 4%, with inpatient mortality reaching 5-10%. For unknown reasons, mortality risk remains high even after hospital discharge and there is a need to identify those patients most at risk. Also of importance, clinical symptoms alone do not distinguish viral from bacterial infection which may delay appropriate treatment and m… Show more

“…Despite this, several recent studies on urine have identified clear shifts in the microbial community associated with age (Adebayo et al, 2020; Curtiss et al, 2018; Gottschick et al, 2017; Komesu et al, 2018; Liu et al, 2017b; Pearce et al, 2014), sex (Lewis et al, 2013; Pederzoli et al, 2020; Pohl et al, 2020), urgency urinary incontinence in women (Brubaker et al, 2014; Karstens et al, 2016; Pearce et al, 2014; K. However, additional work is needed to identify definitive and mechanistic links between the urine / bladder microbiome, host health, and urinary tract disease.…”
