Discovering Usability: Comparing Two Discovery Systems at One Academic Library

Abstract: In the spring of 2013, the University Library at the University of Illinois at Chicago was in the unique position of having access to two discovery systems, Summon and WorldCat Local, at the same time. When tasked with choosing between the two systems, librarians undertook a usability study of Summon and WorldCat Local. The goal of this study was two-fold: to test the ease-of-use of each discovery system with an eye toward identifying one tool to retain for the longer term, and to learn about the search behavi… Show more

“…To evaluate the effectiveness of the interactive 360-degree image in comparison to other Learning Management Systems, we used the qualitative questions of Çöltekin et al [53]. To check whether learners have understood the purpose of these tools, we used the questions of Djenno et al [54]. All guided questions can be found in Appendix C. For analyzing the qualitative semi-structured interviews, we followed the qualitative content analysis of Mayring [55].…”

“…Similarly, a usability study on Ex Libris's Primo revealed that users were disappointed at the lack of full-text options (Comeaux 2012). Furthermore, even when students are capable of using a discovery system to complete tasks, many still opt to use Google or Amazon.com due to lack of overall satisfaction with a discovery system (Djenno et al 2014). Because discovery systems cannot satisfy every information need, many libraries choose to present their discovery tool as one of several options for searching library materials.…”
