Discovering Organizational Hierarchy through a Corporate Ranking Algorithm: The Enron Case

Abstract: This paper proposes the CorpRank algorithm to extract social hierarchies from electronic communication data. The algorithm computes a ranking score for each user as a weighted combination of the number of emails, the number of responses, average response time, clique scores, and several degree and centrality measures. The algorithm uses principal component analysis to calculate the weights of the features. This score ranks users according to their importance, and its output is used to reconstruct an organizati… Show more

“…We hypothesize that the positive association between ECTC eligibility and adult overall health was likely mediated through associated reductions in poverty and financial hardship . Ample research supports this association, with reductions in poverty associated with reduced mortality, disability, heart disease, and diabetes .…”

“…Half of the total value was dispensed in monthly payments from July 15 to December 31 of 2021. These monthly payments were associated with a temporary 40–percentage point reduction in the rate of poverty in households with children . Unlike prior iterations of the Child Tax Credit, these payments were fully refundable, meaning that all low-income households were eligible to receive the full value of the credit as a direct deposit or check .…”

“…CorpRank: This algorithm utilizes electronic communication data to compute a ranking score for each user, incorporating factors such as the number of emails, responses, average response time, clique scores, and various degree and centrality measures [36]. Employing principal component analysis to assign weights to these features, CorpRank showcases its unique ability to capture organizational hierarchies, as demonstrated through its application to the Enron corporation's e-mail archive.…”
