Discordance between measured postural instability and absence of clinical symptoms in Parkinson's disease patients in the early stages of the disease

Abstract: We compared postural performances in early stage Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and healthy subjects, and to determine if PD patients have infraclinical postural instability. Nine PD patients and 18 age- and sex-matched control subjects were recorded with open eyes (OE) and closed eyes (CE) using a force platform in static and dynamic conditions with a mobile platform allowing antero posterior and medio lateral oscillations. Oscillations of the mobile platform and balance strategy were quantified using both… Show more

“…Chastan, Debono, Maltête, and Weber (2008) observed some changes in dynamic postural conditions between patients at early stages of PD and healthy subjects. Despite the changes in postural stability, patients at early stages of PD were also able to recover balance during dynamic tasks, as were healthy subjects.…”

“…A psychogenic etiology of the described disorders can be excluded based on his repeated cycles of changes in spine curvatures during standing, visibly wide range of thoracic spine curvature during standing and sitting, attempts by the patient to maintain correct posture, and psychological examination. Neurological examination helped to exclude another etiology of posture disturbance, e.g., Parkinson's disease or dystonic disorder 7,8 .…”

“…Durante o teste, geralmente é mensurada a posição do centro de pressão (CoP) por meio de posturografia 18 . A posturografia fornece indicadores acurados de equilíbrio dinâmico, como o deslocamento anteroposterior do CoP, que não são obtidos com o exame clínico 19 e onde a excursão do centro de pressão está associada a quedas e fragilidade física 20,21 . Entretanto, os fatores mencionados têm sido pouco considerados na relação e predição do desempenho no teste de alcance funcional em pacientes com DP.…”
