Discharge-dependent covariation patterns in the population dynamics of brown trout (Salmo trutta) within a Cantabrian river drainage

Abstract: Patterns of spatial covariation in the population dynamics of brown trout (Salmo trutta) across Rio Esva (northwestern Spain) were explored by using the residuals from stock-recruitment relationships as indices of survival rates of spawner-to-recruit (STR), spawner-to-cohort size (STC), and spawner-to-spawner (STS). Positive correlations in pairwise comparisons among survival rates together with highly significant spatiotemporal variation in STC (74.3%) and STS (51.5%) explained by variation in STR provided ev… Show more

“…Hydrologic influences on brown trout year-class strength have been previously observed mostly in highgradient, mountainous streams in Europe (e.g., Jensen and Johnsen 1999; Cattanéo et al 2002;Lobón-Cerviá 2004;Lobón-Cerviá and Rincón 2004) and in introduced populations from the USA and New Zealand (e.g., Strange et al 1992;Hayes 1995), as well as in low-gradient streams in the USA (Zorn and Nuhfer 2007). All these works pointed out that 0?trout density was negatively influenced by high stream discharge during or shortly after emergence, resulting in weak year-classes.…”

“…However, some studies have shown that hydrological variability is also of major importance in determining juvenile density in temperate regions. For instance, functional links between recruitment and hydrological factors have been described for some brown trout populations (e.g., Solomon and Paterson 1980;Jensen and Johnsen 1999;Lobón-Cerviá 2004;Lobón-Cerviá and Rincón 2004). Nowadays, it is widely recognized that the impact of hydrological events does not depend only on their magnitude, but also on their timing and the life stage involved.…”

“…Moreover, because of a strong temporal synchrony in the recruitment across sites and streams elucidated in previous studies on these very same year-classes and sites (Lobón-Cerviá 2004), calculating the mean annual recruitment (R a ) and the mean annual CV (CV a ) of juveniles size averaged across sites is pertinent and permits an overall comparison across temporal scales.…”

“…Conceivably, enhanced competition may force individuals to disperse in search of profitable sites elsewhere in the stream. However, this seems most unlikely because high densities at a given stream section are linked to high densities all along the streams caused by a strong temporal synchrony in recruitment (see Lobón-Cerviá 2004, 2008 and as a consequence, a full occupation of foraging sites all along the streams. Recent studies (Svanback and Bolnick 2005) have suggested that under the pressure of density dependence when preferred food items become scarce, individuals may feed opportunistically and increase the diversity of prey resulting in increased diet breadth.…”
