Disc degeneration implies low back pain

Abstract: BackgroundLow back pain exerts a tremendous burden on individual patients and society due to its prevalence and ability to cause long-term disability. Contemporary treatment and prevention efforts are stymied by the absence of a confirmed cause for the majority of low back pain patients.MethodsA system dynamics approach is used to build a physiologically-based model investigating the relationship between disc degeneration and low back pain. The model’s predictions are evaluated under two different types of stu… Show more

“…A major cause of low back pain is the degeneration of the Intervertebral Disc (IVD) . The IVD consists of three parts in one functional unit: a gelatinous center called the nucleus pulposus (NP), an outer fibrocartilaginous ring called the annulus fibrosus (AF), and top and bottom caps called the cartilaginous endplates (EPs) .…”

“…3 A major cause of low back pain is the degeneration of the Intervertebral Disc (IVD). 4 The IVD consists of three parts in one functional unit: a gelatinous center called the nucleus pulposus (NP), an outer fibrocartilaginous ring called the annulus fibrosus (AF), and top and bottom caps called the cartilaginous endplates (EPs). 5 Degeneration of the IVD is a complex pathological process characterized by a loss of hydration, changes in cell populations, a decrease in protein and polysaccharide concentrations and altered biomechanical properties.…”

“…Lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration is the most common cause of low back pain [2]. The pathological process of intervertebral disc degeneration mainly involves dehydration and fibrosis of the nucleus pulposus (NP), tearing of the annulus fibrosus, and sclerosis of the cartilage endplate [3,4].…”

“…Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is the main cause of low back pain [1,2]. The most important factor involved in the development of DDD is the vertical load of spine, which can activate enzymatic processes facilitating discs degenerations, in addition to the purely direct (increased fluid stress and hydrostatic pressure) and indirect (decreased permeability and nutrition) mechanical effects.…”
