Coastal areas are vulnerable to disasters such as tsunamis, floods, large waves, and hurricanes. Most studies on disasters in coastal areas are based on surveys for specific areas, but studies investigating disasters on a country-wide level are few. Applying data analytics to disaster management is critical to reducing the impact of disasters. This study aims to classify provinces based on disaster events, disaster preparedness, and response capacity in coastal villages through cluster analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), and a combination of PCA and cluster analysis. This secondary study applies data mining techniques to official statistics in Indonesia. Data mining was performed with Python Scikit-learn and Tableau analytical software. The unit of analysis is all provinces of Indonesia as an archipelago country. The cluster analysis optimally produced two clusters with 6 (18%) and 27 (82%) provinces. The small cluster, named the high-intensity cluster, has a higher intensity of disaster events, preparedness, and response than the large cluster, named the low-intensity cluster. The low-intensity cluster has a higher percentage of coastal villages (25%) than the high-intensity cluster (10%). The results of the PCA are used to classify regions through geographic heat maps and scatter plots. Additionally, the combination of multiple principal component analysis and cluster analysis produced three clusters with 6 (18%), 10 (30%), and 17 (52%) provinces. However, the cluster model from cluster analysis alone provides a better separation between clusters than the combination of PCA and cluster analysis. Ultimately, cluster analysis and PCA can be used independently, and both methods are complementary to exploring regional classification. The results of this study recommend improvements in disaster preparedness and response for coastal villages, especially provinces with a high percentage of coastal villages.

Bangladesh is exposed to frequent natural disasters such as floods, cyclones, tidal surges, and earthquakes. To improve resilience, the country has implemented multisectoral and muti-level national interventions based on international guidelines over the past few years. As a result, local people have become more knowledgeable about and adept at coping with disasters. While previous studies have focused on the causes and consequences of this development, this study examines the trend of successful disaster risk reduction (DRR) interventions through qualitative research in the southwest coastal area of Bangladesh. The authors performed 10 in-depth interviews, four focus group discussions, non-participatory observatory notes, and gathered 36 photographs of the surrounding landscapes in two selected villages of Dacope Upazila and Mongla Upazila, Khulna Division of Bangladesh. This study has suggested that coastal residents have changed their actions through DRR due to a range of awareness programs led by governmental and non-governmental organizations. While a top-down approach has improved early warning, disaster preparedness, and safer environments, a bottom-up approach should be considered to incorporate effective local DRR activities such as kinship network support. These findings suggest that both new and traditional disaster-coping activities should be integrated into more effective DRR strategies.

The COVID-19 posed severe public health effects across the world to an extent that it was declared a pandemic. Aside the health effects are other consequences associated with measures such as lockdown, isolation and physical distancing to curb the spread of the virus. This study assesses the impact of the pandemic on households and their adaptation across different residential density zones in Abeokuta, Nigeria, with a novelty of understanding its socio-spatial context. This study utilised a quantitative research design based on a cross-sectional survey for the phases of data collection, analysis and interpretation. A two-stage sampling technique was employed in selecting 422 participants for the study. All participants were administered questionnaire and 391 copies were considered during data analysis. The data were analysed using cross-tabulation and the hypotheses tested using ANOVA. Findings on socioeconomic characteristics showed that the distribution of respondents descriptively varied across the high, medi residential density zones. Evidence of significant variances in the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on households ([F (2, 388) = 30.406, p = 0.000]) and their adaptation strategies ([F (2, 388) = 39.539, p = 0.000]) were established across residential zones in Abeokuta. The practical implication provides for policymakers and stakeholders to design targeted interventions and support measures for households. The theoretical implication is about contributing to the existing body of knowledge on the impact of pandemics on households by establishing a socio-spatial context and highlighting the need for socioeconomic context-specific responses.
