El cambio climático es uno de los mayores desafíos a los que nos enfrentamos como sociedad en la actualidad. Desde inicios del siglo XX, la temperatura mundial viene en constante ascenso y la mayor intensidad y frecuencia de eventos climáticos extremos representan hoy una amenaza creciente para las ciudades. El cambio climático afecta a los servicios de infraestructura y, dentro de estos, muy especialmente a los servicios de agua potable y saneamiento, debido a la estrecha relación que tiene el cambio climático con el ciclo del agua. Las actividades cotidianas de los operadores de agua se ven seriamente afectadas por los incrementos en la temperatura del aire y de las fuentes de agua, las sequías, las lluvias intensas, el derretimiento de glaciares y la elevación del nivel del mar, entre otros. Esta monografía realiza un recuento de los distintos impactos que el cambio climático tiene en la provisión de los servicios de agua y saneamiento, así como de las opciones de adaptación que están a disposición de los operadores de agua. Con información de la base de datos de DesInventar, el documento analiza qué eventos tienen una mayor prevalencia en las sub-regiones de América Latina y el Caribe y cuáles afectan particularmente más a los sistemas de agua y saneamiento. Finalmente, presenta los resultados de una encuesta realizada a 61 operadores de agua en 11 países de la región, cuyo objetivo es conocer los impactos del cambio climático que más los afectan y las medidas que están adoptando para enfrentar el cambio climático y garantizar la resiliencia en la provisión de los servicios que prestan.
