Disability, physical health and mental health 1 year after traumatic brain injury

Abstract: The results demonstrated that a significant proportion of TBI survivors face substantial disability and impaired overall health 1 year after injury. To optimise health and well-being outcomes, clinicians need to ensure that health needs of patients with less severe TBI are identified and treated during the post-acute period.

“…39 The measure is routinely used during acute rehabilitation as a reliable indicator of patient progress and is also used to assess long-term outcome after injury. 40,41 This measure consists of 18 items composed of 13 motor tasks and 5 cognitive tasks. Each task is rated on a 7-point ordinal scale ranging from complete dependence to complete independence.…”

“…In general, there are several recently published retrospective studies that comprise long-term recovery after moderate and severe TBI [5][6][7]. But prospective studies on functional recovery and outcome are limited [8,9]. Studies from different countries are required to provide "better understanding of regional, national and international differences and needs in the area of brain injury rehabilitation" [10].…”

“…1 The ongoing effects of injury have been shown to impact on all aspects of a person's life, 2 including compromised physical [3][4][5][6] and psychological functioning. 4,[6][7][8][9][10][11] The economic consequences of injury are also substantial. Rates of return to work following severe injury are variable, but approximately 50% of patients have not returned to work within five years.…”

“…greater independenct in physical functioning) have also been proposed as potentially modificable factors that affect recovery after traumatic injury. 6,23 However, little is known about the trajectory of these factors over time. To date, few post-acute care factors have been examined thoroughly, despite the potential utility of these variables.…”
