Directly High-Voltage Measuring System Based on Pockels Effect

Abstract: To measure high voltage up to 450 kV in the dc to GHz range, a new optical high-voltage measuring system using a Pockels crystal in a longitudinal modulation arrangement is developed. The maximum measurable voltage for conventional Pockels sensors has been limited by the half-wavelength voltage . In the new system, a two-wavelength dual laser system is introduced to expand measurable voltage up to the least common multiple of for each light. The measured results for dc, ac, lightning impulse, and step voltages… Show more

“…1,2 Voltage sensors based on electro-optical crystals such as Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 , bismuth silicate and LiNbO 3 have been applied in high voltage systems [3][4][5][6][7][8] because of their wide operating bands, rapid response characteristics, low electromagnetic interference characteristics, and low optical transmission loss. However, some of these sensors have high half-wave voltages and low electro-optic coefficients, and are less sensitive to low voltage signals.…”

“…Capacitance or resistance connect hollow coil or small current transformer has no active power consumption, but it can be influenced for the precision in a certain extent by environmental factors such as temperature, magnetic field etc. Optical voltage sensing technology mainly uses the physical characteristics of optical materials mainly includes electronic voltage transformer technology based on Pockels effect and inverse voltage effect, however, due to the high demand for materials and equipment, the crystal is easy to be affected by vibration, environmental temperature and other factors, the stability and reliability need to be further strengthened [3,4]. This paper proposes an AC high-voltage measuring system based on high voltage standard capacitor.…”

“…6 Therefore, sensors based on the electro-optic effect have been developed by a number of researchers to overcome the above problems. [7][8][9][10][11] Various electric-optic sensors have been developed since the 1970s. Some of the research work has been performed with the aim of measuring high voltages and high electrical fields.…”
