A new hypoplastic model for clays with meta-stable structure is presented in this paper. A new method for incorporation of structure effects into hypoplastic models based on the modification of barotropy and pyknotropy factors is proposed and applied to an existing hypoplastic model for reconstituted clays. The new model is characterized by a simple calibration procedure and a small number of parameters. This makes the model particularly suitable for practical applications. The model is evaluated using experimental data for two natural soft clays. Thanks to the incrementally nonlinear character of the hypoplastic equation, the proposed model predicts behaviour of overconsolidated clays comparably to advanced kinematic hardening elastoplastic models.Résumé : On présente dans cet article un nouveau modèle hypoplastique pour des argiles avec une métastructure. On propose une nouvelle méthode pour l'incorporation des effets de structure dans les modèles hypoplastiques basés sur la modification des facteurs de barotropie et de pyknotropie et on la met en application dans un modèle hypoplastique existant pour les argiles reconstituées. Le nouveau modèle est caractérisé par une simple procédure de calibrage et un petit nombre de paramètres. Ceci rend le modèle particulièrement approprié pour les applications pratiques. Le modèle est évalué au moyen de données expérimentales obtenues sur deux argiles molles naturelles. Grâce au caractère incrémentiel non-linéaire de l'équation hypoplastique, le modèle proposé prédit le comportement des argiles surconsolidées comparable à celui des modèles avancés élastoplastiques d'écrouissage cinématique.

The paper studies some consequences of the mathematical formulation of the recently proposed hypoplastic model for clays. Particular attention is paid to the question if the hypoplastic model predicts existence of the state boundary surface, defined as a boundary of all admissible states in the stress-void ratio space. It is shown that the model enables us to derive an explicit formulation of asymptotic (swept-out-memory) states in the stress-void ratio space, which constitute so-called swept-out-memory surface. Further it is demonstrated that the swept-out-memory surface is a close approximation of the state boundary surface although, in general, they do not coincide. Finally, the influence of constitutive parameters on the shape of the swept-out-memory surface is studied. For parameters reasonable for fine-grained soils its shape is similar to the state boundary surface of the Modified Cam clay model.

a b s t r a c tThe paper demonstrates the application of a hypoplastic model in class A predictions of a NATM tunnel in an urban environment. The tunnel, excavated in a stiff clay, is 14 m wide with 6 m to 21 m of overburden thickness. The constitutive model was calibrated using laboratory data (oedometric and triaxial tests) and the parameters were optimised using monitoring data from an exploratory drift. Based on the optimised data set, the future tunnel was simulated. After the tunnel excavation, it could be concluded that the model predicted correctly surface settlements, surface horizontal displacements, and the distribution of vertical displacements with depth. It overpredicted horizontal displacements in the vicinity of the tunnel.
