Direction of the mental canal in human mandibles

Abstract: The direction of the mental canal was calculated in the horizontal and vertical planes with a view to aiding anaesthetic techniques. Based on our data, it is advisable to give the following approximate inclinations to the needle when penetrating the mental canal in anaesthetic procedures: 55 degrees postero-anteriorly in relation to a horizontal plane and 40 degrees latero-medially in relation to a horizontal line tangent to the body of the mandible at the level of the mental foramen.

“…Based on the findings of de Freitas et al (1976), it is advisable to turn the needle at the moment of the penetration of the mental canal: 55 degrees posterior-anterior in relation to the horizontal plane and 40 degrees lateral-medial in relation to the horizontal tangent of the body of the mandible at the level of the mental foramen. Also, Fishel et al (1976) did a radiological study of the mentonian foramen, where they examined one thousand full mouth inter-oral x-rays and after the analysis, on the horizontal plane, in around 70% of the cases, the mental foramen was located between the two premolars and in 22% of the cases the foramen was located in the apical area of the premolars.…”

“…The mental foramen is a funnel-shaped opening in the buccal cortical bone of the mandible (1). The direction of exit through the bone is usually in a posterior and superior direction (4,13). The smallest diameter of the foramen would usually be inferior and mesial to the buccal surface of the mandible.…”

“…de Freitas et al (1976), studied the direction of the mental canal in both horizontal and vertical planes on two hundred and seventy five human adult mandibles of one hundred and eighty five men and ninety women from Brazil were used. The age of the samples was not determined.…”
