Direction of CRT waste glass processing: Electronics recycling industry communication

Households and businesses produce high levels of electrical and electronic waste (e-waste), fueled by modernization and rapid obsolescence. While the challenges imposed by e-waste are similar everywhere in the world, disparities in progress to deal with it exist, with developing nations lagging. The increase in e-waste generation highlights the need to develop ways to manage it. This paper reviews global and South African e-waste management practices with a specific case study on Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) waste. CRTs present the biggest problem for recyclers and policy makers because they contain lead and antimony. Common disposal practices have been either landfilling or incineration. Research into South African CRT waste management practices showed there is still more to do to manage this waste stream effectively. However, recent developments have placed e-waste into a priority waste stream, which should lead to intensified efforts in dealing with it. Overall, these efforts aim to increase diversion from landfill and create value-adding opportunities, leading to social and environmental benefits.

Abstract. The paper reports the development of a methodology based on computer simulations with the purpose to support decisions in designing the optimal architecture of different types of selective waste collection systems and recycling systems. The design of such systems is a complex task which involves both a very good knowledge of selective waste collection system equipment characteristics and of recycling processes, and the correct placing of the equipment along the flow so that to avoid underutilization of the structural elements and to avoid bottlenecks which generate low productivity or even blockages. The methodology is applied for three case studies in which different types of waste flow models are investigated: hybrid waste flows (windshields recycling), discrete waste flows (waste electric and electronic equipment collection) and continuous flows (industrial and automotive used oil collection and recycling). The architectures of these systems are optimized using the developed methodology in order to increase usage degree and productivity.

This study investigates the usability of the cathode ray tube (CRT) glass waste in a binder system. The raw materials -glass waste, river sand and cement were characterised. CRT waste was added in the amount of 30, 40 to 50 weight percent, as replacement for river sand. Glass chemical composition shows a high content in lead and alkaline oxides. Mortar prisms were prepared and kept under humid conditions. The mechanical properties were studied after 7, 28 and 90 days respectively. SEM with additional EDS was used in order to investigate the microstructure of the samples. All the samples containing glass waste achieved higher compressive strength than the control mortar. After 14, 28 and 42 days of maintaining the mortar in water no evidence of Pb was detected in the solutions.
