Directed cell movement and cluster formation : physical principles

Abstract: The cell-cell interaction of migrating human leukocytes (granulocytes) was investigated. We have found that the attractive pair interaction of granulocytes can be switched-off at high calcium concentrations and switched-on at low calcium concentrations.

“…At high enough cell density, the cells form a cluster where each cell tries to move towards the center of the cluster [7]. (b) A similar process is observed with migrating white blood cells [3]. If human leukocytes (granulocytes) are expose to blood plasma they then migrate as single amoeboid cells on a surface as shown in Figure 1a.…”

“…To generate a liquid crystal one must use anisotropic objects, like elongated molecules. Several ways are known to achieve this: with small molecules; with long helical rods that either occur in nature or can be made artificially; with polymers; with more complex structure units like the capside of a virus [2], that is an associated structure of molecules and ions; likewise, with even more complex structure units, like amoeboid cells which are complex structures far from thermodynamic equilibrium and act as machines [3][4][5].…”

“…The strong cell-cell attraction creates droplets of cells where each cell tries to reach the center of the droplet. This ordered structure is verified for human granulocytes exposed to low calcium concentration [12] and for slime mould cells exposed to low nutrition concentration [26].…”

“…The stability of such self-organized structures cannot be derived by searching the minimum of a thermodynamic potential (thermodynamic equilibrium) because the involved cells are energy consuming machines which work far from thermodynamic equilibrium. The following new concept is used [8,[11][12][13]:…”
