Direct visualization of intracranial tumours in stereotactic and angiographic films by computer calculation of longitudinal CT-sections: A new method for stereotactic localization of tumour outlines

Abstract: A new method for the direct transformation not only of a target point, but also of the whole tumour outlines from sagittal, coronal, and oblique computer calculated CT-reconstructions to stereotactic X-ray films of any scale is presented. The role of this method in the stereotactic therapy of intracranial tumours and the possibilities which are thus provided are discussed.

“…24,25 Computer-assisted (STP 3.5; Stryker-Leibinger, Freiburg, Germany) trajectories 26,27 for stereotactic biopsy and intracerebral implantation were defined for one or two silicon catheters (Phoenix Biomedical, Valley Forge, PA). The location of biopsy and definite positions of infusion catheters were documented on stereotactic x-ray images.…”

“…Espe cially in neurosurgery, where a precise local ization of tumor extent is essential, it is evi dent to integrate these new methods and equip ment into 'computer-aided surgery' [ 12], For the most current stereotactic devices the manufacturers deliver small programs and computers for the calculation of the tar get coordinates; in some CT scanners a tar geting software is integrated. Some more elaborate imaging programs [3,10,14,15] were written which in addition to the CT or MRI coordinates integrate more data (bone details, reconstruction of tumor outlines, brain atlas, angiography pictures). Watanabe et al [16] developed a CT-guided digitizing arm comparable with our system.…”
