Direct uranium trace analysis in plutonium solutions by time-resolved laser-induced spectrofluorometry

Abstract: This paper describes a new procedure for the direct determination of uranium In plutonium solutions using tlme-reeoived spectrofluorometry. The analytical method is based upon the use of sulfuric add as a dilution medium and leads to a detection limit of U/Pu = 0.2 ppm. A formula taking Into account both quenching and Inner-filter effects Is presented. It permits the calculation of the detection limit of uranium In complex solutions and could be used to obtain a theoretical limit of detection for similar appli… Show more

“…The estimation of uranium at low levels is essential in a number of nuclear applications such as nuclear fuel reprocessing and environmental monitoring [1][2][3][4][5]. In addition to the estimation of uranium, the determination of lanthanides are also important in the nuclear industry, in addition to its applications in other areas such as geochemistry [6,7] and other industries related to metallurgy, glass, ceramics and nuclear engineering [8][9][10][11].…”

“…La SLRT a Ă©tĂ© utilisĂ©e depuis quelques annĂ©es dans de nombreuses applications de dosages d'actinides ou de terres rares par mesures de fluorescence (Berthoud, 1988 ;Deniau, 1993 ;Moulin, 1990 ;Moulin, 1995). Son application au dosage de l'uranium dans les urines est relativement rĂ©cente (Decambox, 1991).…”

“…The estimation of uranium at trace levels is essential in a number of nuclear related applications, such as fuel preparation, reprocessing and environmental monitoring [1][2][3][4][5]. While fluorescence spectroscopy is an excellent analytical tool for such estimations, the fluorescence of uranium is known to be weak in aqueous solutions, due to the quenching by water.…”
