Direct synthesis of fibrous high molecular weight polyethylene using vanadium catalysts supported on an SiO2ionic liquid system

Abstract: The produced fibrous polyethylene has high molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution. This specific junction of both features seems to come from the applied catalysts and SIL strategy.

“…SEM images (Fig. 2c, d) of the copolymer sample with rather low NB incorporation (7 mol%) show that copolymer looses its fibrous feature, characteristic for polyethylene obtained on the same catalyst [32]. In addition, the irregular shape indicates that catalyst replication does not take place.…”

“…Thus, the SIL systems combine the advantages of both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts while reducing their disadvantages [30]. The SIL systems can be successfully applied for ethylene polymerization [31][32][33]. The silica covered by imidiazolium or pyridinium chloroaluminate ionic liquid is applied as support of the zirconium, titanium, or vanadium catalysts.…”

“…Ochedzan‐Siodlak, and Bihun reported a direct synthesis of fibrous high‐MW polyethylene using vanadium catalysts supported on SiO 2 ionic liquid system. Better performance of ethylene polymerization was observed when alkylaluminium activators (AlEt 2 Cl, AlEtCl 2 ) were applied, while methylaluminoxane (MAO) resulted in a decrease of the catalyst activity and molecular weight as well as in a broad MWD …”

“…This method is widely used in reactions like hydroformylation, hydroamination, dehydrogenation, cycloaddition, Fischer esterification, transesterification or Friedel–Crafts alkylation and acylation . The concept of solid carrier covered by ionic liquid is also used as an alternative to conventional heterogenization of organometallic catalysts for olefin oligomerization and polymerization including production of PE …”

“…In our previous studies concerning ethylene polymerization, the SIL system was obtained by modification of an amorphous mesoporous silica using imidazolium ethylchloroaluminate ionic liquid and successfully applied to immobilize both metallocene catalysts (Cp 2 TiCl 2 , Cp 2 ZrCl 2 ) and post‐metallocene catalysts (Sal‐Ti and FI‐Ti) . Application of the Cp 2 VCl 2 catalyst resulted in a high‐molecular‐weight PE with an unusual structure in the form of fibres . Unfortunately, the polymerization yield was low.…”
