Direct Spectroscopic Observation of a Shallow Hydrogenlike Donor State in InsulatingSrTiO3

Abstract: We present a direct spectroscopic observation of a shallow hydrogenlike muonium state in SrTiO(3) which confirms the theoretical prediction that interstitial hydrogen may act as a shallow donor in this material. The formation of this muonium state is temperature dependent and appears below ∼ 70K. From the temperature dependence we estimate an activation energy of ∼ 50 meV in the bulk and ∼ 23 meV near the free surface. The field and directional dependence of the muonium precession frequencies further supports … Show more

“…There are some important discrepancies between this µ + SR study and the preceding work by Salman et al 18 They determined the principal values of the hyperfine coupling tensor A ′ as 1.4(1), 6.7(1), and 11.5(1) MHz from µ + SR frequencies observed at 25 K in ZF. Because the dipolar part in A ′ should be traceless, the coefficient of the isotropic part is estimated as Tr[A ′ ]/3 = 6.5(1) MHz, which is comparable in magnitude with the largest principal value.…”

“…In Ref. [ 18 ], TF dependences of paramagnetic frequencies at 25 K below 12 mT were analyzed with A ′ expressed in the laboratory frame using two sets of Euler angles. The high-field extension of paramagnetic frequency shifts calculated with these parameters is shown in Fig.…”

“…Using a simple one-dimensional model allowed to determine the nearsurface/interface electric field profile inside the sample. This kind of investigation recently revealed the presence of a shallow hydrogen donor state in SrTiO 3 with decreasing ionization energy at the surface 61 . It can be extended to semiconductors or semiconductor heterostructures with not too high doping levels ( < ∼ 10 17 cm −3 ) and defect concentrations ( < ∼ 10 16 cm −3 ).…”

“…insulating regions). 31 Second, in the case of an undoped STO film, muonium formation was previously shown to occur at 70 K, 32 far from the 20 K upturn in the trilayer wTF data. Finally, muonium formation is often suppressed in metallic materials such as STO quantum wells that contain highly confined 2DELs.…”
