SUMMARYThis paper proposes a novel "Direct Space Vector PWM (Direct SVPWM)" strategy based on the direct AC/AC conversion approach for three-phase to three-phase matrix converters. This method allows the sinusoidal input and output waveforms as a major premise, and gives top priority to the improvement of output control performance in motor drive applications, such as providing maximum riding comfort in elevators, etc. Output voltage harmonics, switching losses, and common-mode voltages can be reduced across the entire voltage region. In addition, the switching count can be reduced even further by fully utilizing the output current detection value. Direct space vectors are first defined, and the method of selecting space vectors is described. Next, the PWM duty calculation technique is explained. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is demonstrated by comparison with the conventional virtual indirect method based on experimental and analytical results.

Abstract-This paper presents a new space vector modulation (SVM) strategy for matrix converters to reduce the commonmode voltage (CMV). The reduction is achieved by using the switch configurations that connect each input phase to a different output phase, or the configurations that connect all the output phases to the input phase with minimum absolute voltage. These two types of configurations always produce lower peak CMV than the others, especially the former ones that result in zero CMV at the output side of matrix converters. In comparison with the existing SVM methods, this strategy has a very similar software overhead and calculation time. Simulation and experiment results are shown to validate the effectiveness of the proposed modulation method in reducing not only the peak value but also the root mean square value of the CMV.

Large magnitude common-mode voltage (CMV) and its variation dv/dt have an adverse effect on motor drives that leads to early winding failure and bearing deterioration. For matrix converters, the switch states that connect each output line to a different input phase result in the lowest CMV among all of the valid switch states. To reduce the output CMV for matrix converters, this paper presents a new space vector modulation (SVM) strategy by utilizing these switch states. By this mean, the peak value and the root mean square of the CMV are dramatically decreased. In comparison with the conventional SVM methods this strategy has a similar computation overhead. Experiment results are shown to validate the effectiveness of the proposed modulation method.
