Direct Serotyping of Enteroviruses in Cerebrospinal Fluid of Children With Aseptic Meningitis

Abstract: Background: Viral meningitis is an inflammation of the leptomeninges as a manifestation of central nervous system (CNS) infection. More than 85% of viral meningitis cases are caused by non-polio enteroviruses. This is the first study on the description of the enteroviruses and the related serotypes involved in viral meningitis in Iran. Objectives: This project was conducted to improve our knowledge about the role of enteroviruses and their circulating serotypes in viral meningitis in Iran. Patients and Methods… Show more

“…Also the results from repeated cultures and the similar isolation rates in other studies would reject the possibility of contamination of specimens. However, final approval for bacterial meningitis caused by CoNS was accompanied with the results of CSF examination (glucose and protein level) to differentiate from asymptomatic meningitis (22) (16,26). In Ethiopia, N. meningitides was reported as the most common isolate among neonates and young children, and S. pneumonia, as the leading causes of bacterial meningitis in the adults groups, in a one -year hospital survey (17).…”

“…In contrast to our study, the mean age of the cases in these studies has been mainly less than the 8 years. Another study in children medical center in Tehran showed the "enterovirus detection rate" was 10.16% in all 118 CSFs and most patients were 0 -2 years old (40.67%) (16).…”

“…22,23 It has been shown that PCR is more susceptible than cell culture, especially different clinical samples with low volume and viral load such as cerebrospinal fluid, and some HPeV types are difficult to cultivate. [23][24][25][26][27] In this study, HPeVs were differentiated by RT-PCR amplification method and specific primers from 5′UTR region in viral genome. It has been shown that genotyping of HPeVs is based on VP1 sequence and is related to serotyping.…”
