Direct reactions of tellurium tetrahalides with chelating nitrogen ligands. Trapping of TeI2by a 1,2-bis(arylimino)acenaphthene (aryl-BIAN) ligand and C–H activation of an α,α′-diiminopyridine (DIMPY) ligand

Abstract: The reaction of TeI4 with the 2,6-diisopropylphenyl-substituted 1,2-bis(arylimino)acenaphthene ligand dpp-BIAN results in two-electron reduction of tellurium and formation of the complex (dpp-BIAN)TeI2, while treatment of TeCl4 with the alpha,alpha'-diiminopyridine ligand dpp-DIMPY causes C-H activation of an imino methyl group.

“…The environment of the chalcogen atom approximates a square planar coordination but the plane defined by the Cl1-Te1-Cl1 2 atoms is rotated by 3.9(3) • from the heterocycle plane and the Cl atoms are located 0.167(7) Å above and below this plane. In this respect the structure resembles that of [(dpp-Bian)TeI 2 ] [25]. The molecules adopt a head to tail arrangement in the crystal, the next molecule being rotated 74.20(8) • from the first; neighboring chains run in antiparallel fashion with respect to each other.…”

“…Samples of the bulk material were redissolved in acetonitrile-d 3 4 All of the spectra indicated a single product with a symmetric environment for the DIMPY ligand, contrary to the report of a chalcogen-DIMPY system that resulted in an N,N′,C-bound tellurium center. 5 6 Crystals of 1S, 1Se, and 1bTe suitable for X-ray diffraction studies were grown by vapor diffusion of Et 2 O into acetonitrile solutions of the redissolved bulk powders. In all cases, the diffraction experiments revealed dicationic complexes of the respective chalcogen, where the salts were isolated in high yields (1S, 82%; 1Se, 87%; 1bTe, 90%) ( Figure 2).…”
