Direct Probes of 4 nm Diameter Gold Nanoparticles Interacting with Supported Lipid Bilayers

Abstract: This work presents molecular-level investigations of how wellcharacterized silica-supported phospholipid bilayers formed from either pure DOPC or a 9:1 mixture of DOPC:DOTAP interact with positively and negatively charged 4 nm gold metal nanoparticles at pH 7.4 and NaCl concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 0.1 M. Second harmonic generation (SHG) charge screening measurements indicate the supported bilayers carry a negative interfacial potential. Resonantly enhanced SHG measurements probing electronic transitio… Show more

“…Instead, fluctuations of the polarization between preferred P values indicate a hindered diffusion in which the NPs commute between different discrete trap sites. Similar behavior has been previously observed in the studies of the NPs on planar lipid bilayer and liposome systems 5961 . In the presence of chol, frequent rapid transitions between these different preferred configurations are observed at both 25 °C and 45 °C (two temperatures below and above the phase transition temperature of the viral membrane 62 ), as shown with the blue PFTs and their corresponding histograms in Figures 4c,d (more PFT histograms are shown in Supporting Information Section D and Figure S8).…”

“…The presented experimental findings demonstrate that the Gouy-Chapman model, despite its wide use, [37][38][39][40][41] is not suitable without modification to describe the diffuse double layer around lipid membranes, even under conditions of low ionic strength. Specifically, the relatively strong association of counter-ions with interfacial charged groups should be taken into account.…”

“…For example, zwitterionic phosphocholine (PC) liposomes can adsorb a diverse range of nanomaterials, including latex beads, 8,9 TiO2, [10][11][12] graphene oxide, 13,14 nano-diamonds, 15 and gold NPs (AuNPs). [16][17][18][19][20][21][22] Among these materials, AuNPs are particularly interesting: 1) the surface chemistry of AuNPs can be readily controlled by capping with thiol ligands; 2) AuNPs display distance-dependent color due to surface plasmon coupling, allowing convenient visual monitoring; 23 and 3) AuNPs have strong van der Waals interaction (i.e. large Hamaker constant) with other surfaces thus making strong physisorption possible.…”
