Direct Observation of the Critical Relaxation of Polarization Clusters inBaTiO3Using a Pulsed X-Ray Laser Technique

Abstract: We have developed a new method to investigate the relaxation time of the dipole moment in polarization clusters in BaTiO3. Time correlation of speckle intensities was measured by the use of a double pulsed soft x-ray laser. The evolution of the relaxation time of the dipole moment near the Curie temperature (T(C)) was investigated. The maximum relaxation time (approximately 90 ps) is shown to appear at a temperature of 4.5 K above the T(C), being coincident with the one where the maximum polarization takes pla… Show more

“…They were indeed observed in pure BaTiO 3 by means of photon correlation spectroscopy 31 and by the picosecond soft x-ray laser speckle technique. 32,33 The fluctuation lifetime was found to be of the order of 10-100 ps. 33 In contrast to the normal ferroelectric compound, the relaxor-forming compounds are characterized above T f by polar nanoregions of long lifetime, which allows us to consider them as stable entities.…”

“…In particular, they proposed that precursor dynamics set in at a certain temperature (T c þ 75 K) above the phase transition temperature T c [8]. The existence of local noncentrosymmetric polar regions has been evidenced by many experimental observations such as anomalous birefringence [9], pulsed X-ray speckle measurements [10], photon correlation spectroscopy study [11], and Brillouin light scattering [12,13]. The previous Brillouin scattering studies on BaTiO 3 showed a significant softening of the longitudinal acoustic (LA) mode propagating along the h1 0 0i direction in the cubic phase and a remarkable increase in the hypersonic damping along with a strong excitation of central peaks (CPs) near T c .…”

“…The speckle pattern and interference pattern measurements were the research techniques using the features of a spatial coherence and a short duration time of the SXRL pulses. [10][11][12][13][14][15] The evaluation of interaction of Xe clusters with the SXRL pulse was the research using an advantage not only of the short wavelength of the beam but also of the large number of photons in the pulse. 16 Recently, we investigated a characteristic and intensity distribution of the focal patterns of SXRL pulses by means of color center formation in LiF crystal, 17 and the ablation property of LiF crystal was also studied experimentally 18 and theoretically.…”
