Direct Observation of Effective Temperature of Ta Atom in Layer Compound TaS2 by Neutron Resonance Absorption Spectrometer

Abstract: A neutron resonance absorption spectrometer, DOG, has been installed at KENS, High Energy Accelerator Research Organization Neutron Source, which enables us to investigate the motions of a particular element by analyzing the line width of resonance absorption spectrum. We measured the temperature dependence of the effective temperature of Ta motion in TaS2 as well as in Ta metal using DOG. The effective temperatures extracted from the observed absorption spectrum agree well with the calculated values from the … Show more

“…For instance, a number of detector technologies were developed over the years at HUNS, including 2D position-sensitive neutron detectors, [94][95][96][97][98][99] a wavelength-shifting fiber detector, [99] direct-readout pixel-type detectors, [98,100] a boron-type GEM detector, [101] and a neutron image intensifier. [101] A neutron resonance absorption spectroscopy system is also available at HUNS [102] which uses lithium-glass scintillator pixel-type detectors for neutron absorption spectrum recording and BaF2 scintillation detectors for prompt gamma-ray measurements.…”

“…The method enables us to investigate motions of a particular nuclide, because we can identify it by the resonance energies [1,2]. Some of the resonance absorption cross sections are very large values, 73 Ta has 13,000 barns at 4.28 eV for example, then the method has very high sensitivity.…”

“…J-PARC [51] and ISIS [42] also have performed neutron resonance temperature measurements. These methods can be applied with this setup after selecting a region of interest from a radiographic or tomographic characterization, e.g., an inclusion or the most homogeneous volume within a sample to measure temperature or chemistry most reliably.…”
