Direct measurement of αQED(m Z 2 ) at the FCC-ee

Abstract: When the measurements from the FCC-ee become available, an improved determination of the standard-model "input" parameters will be needed to fully exploit the new precision data towards either constraining or fitting the parameters of beyond-thestandard-model theories. Among these input parameters is the electromagnetic coupling constant estimated at the Z mass scale, α QED (m 2 Z ). The measurement of the muon forwardbackward asymmetry at the FCC-ee, just below and just above the Z pole, can be used to make a… Show more

“…The idea of using precision measurement of the charge asymmetry A F B near Z resonance in order to extract the QED coupling constant at the the electroweak scale α QED (M Z ) was proposed quite recently in ref. [103]. It is an alternative to the current method calculating α QED (M Z ) using as an input very precisely known α QED (0) and the low energy hadronic cross section as an input to dispersion relations.…”

“…It was demonstrated [9] that A FB (µµ) around the Z pole could also be used to directly measure the electromagnetic coupling constant, α QED (m 2 Z ), with an adequate accuracy to match the precision on the other input parameters of the Standard Model and exploiting the full potential of the FCC to constrain or fit the parameters of Beyond-the-Standard Model theories.…”

“…The experimental issues involved in resonant depolarization for energy calibration at FCC-ee were recently studied systematically. 18 Other continuing studies at FCC-ee include the measurement of top quark couplings 19 and of the value of α at the Z mass scale, 20 avoiding the need to directly understand hadronic contributions to the running. Such studies, beyond the preliminary estimates, are important to assess whether bottlenecks can be overcome to achieve higher precision results like the inner ellipses in Figure 4.…”
