Abstract. The passive and hybrid Q-switching and mode-locking of solid-state lasers, dye lasers, semiconductor lasers and gas lasers is reviewed. The dynamics of saturable absorbers and reverse saturable absorbers is illustrated. The nanosecond pulse generation by passive and hybrid Q-switching of low-gain active media is described. The picosecond and femtosecond pulse generation by passive and hybrid mode-locking in low-gain and highgain active media is analysed. The performance data of passively and hybridly mode-locked cw femtosecond dye lasers are collected. The pulse shortening of ultra-fast pulses with saturable absorbers in intra-cavity and extra-cavity configurations is discussed. PACS: 42.55The photonic switching of lasers provides an important technique to generate short light pulses in the nanosecond to femtosecond time regime. The photons generated in the laser modify the transmission of the switching elements and cause the formation of short pulses. Saturable absorbers serve as intensity or energy dependent coupling elements in most cases. But occasionally intensity and energy-dependent refractive index changes have been applied. Nanosecond light pulses are generated in passively Q-switched lasers. The passive mode-locking of laser leads to the generation of nanosecond, picosecond or femtosecond pulse trains. The actual pulse durations depend on the spectroscopic data of the active media and of the passive elements.The nonlinear response of absorbers to light radiation is introduced in the next section [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. The passive, and the hybrid Q-switching are discussed in . The passive, and the hybrid modelocking are described in Sect. 3. A distinction is made between the mode-locking of low-gain and high-gain active media [35 45]. The simultaneous Qswitching and mode-locking is discussed shortly in Sect. 4. A final section is devoted to the intra-cavity and extra-cavity pulse shortening with saturable absorbers [46][47][48][49][50].

“…Bechtel and Smith (1975) and Birmontas et al (1978) studied statistical fluctuations in the pulse widths and energies, while Zherikhin et a1 (1974a) and Chekalin et a1 (1974) investigated the effect of an intracavity telescope on the process of formation of ultrashort pulses in their Nd :YAG system (see § 6.3.3 for a detailed interpretation of this work). While Siebert and Montry (1978) showed that self-phase modulation (SPM) in YAG led to temporal fragmentation of the pulses in the far field, Sauteret and Novaro (1980), who used a novel Young's slit technique for diagnosing phase structure, stressed that the linear frequency sweeps they recorded were not in themselves consistent with self-phase modulation effects.…”

The generation of ultrashort laser pulses

Ultrashort laser pulses are finding increasing application in numerous branches of science and technology. This article is an attempt to provide a comprehensive review of the whole field of ultrashort pulse generation, covering both the experimental and the theoretical aspects of the subject. By far the commonest method of generating pulses in the picosecond and subpicosecond regime is the technique known as 'modelocking' and it is with this that the review is therefore largely concerned. After introductory remarks and a simple treatment of some of the general principles, the central sections of the review deal with the main generic techniques, namely spontaneous mode-locking, active mode-locking (including mode-locking by synchronous pumping) and passive mode-locking. Within each section the material is organised into three main categories, namely ( a ) general background, ( b ) historical survey (mainly relating to experimental work and densely packed with references to published work) and (c) theoretical methods (presented with a strongly pedagogical flavour). A major section at the end deals with a mass of important (and mostly recent) work that does not fit naturally into the main framework of the review. This includes USP generation in semiconductor lasers, a number of special methods such as injection mode-locking (and others where two or more mode-locking techniques are combined), as well as chopping and switching techniques.
