Direct measurement of neuronal ensemble activity using photoacoustic imaging in the stimulated Fos-LacZ transgenic rat brain: A proof-of-principle study

Abstract: Highlights We developed a photoacoustic modality for direct imaging of Fos-expressing neuronal ensembles in Fos-LacZ transgenic rats. X-gal product provided exogenous contrast for imaging of neuronal ensembles. We detected Fos-expressing activated neuronal ensembles after either cocaine administration or a shock-tone pairing paradigm.
