Direct growth of plasmonic nanorod forests on paper substrates for low-cost flexible 3D SERS platforms

Abstract: Paper substrates, coated with ZnO nanorods (NRs) decorated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs), allowed the production of inexpensive, highly-performing and extremely reproducible three-dimensional (3D) SERS platforms. The ZnO NRs were synthesized by a simple, fast and low-temperature hydrothermal method assisted by microwave radiation and made SERS-active by decorating them with a dense array of silver nanoparticles deposited via a single-step thermal evaporation technique. Using Rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a probe molecul… Show more

“…For measurements on top of a microsphere with Ag nanoislands as a cap, clearer spectrum with distinctive peaks at 613, 772, 931, 1000, 1190, 1360, 1509, 1540, 1575, 1598, and 1648 cm −1 can be distinguished, which verifies the enhanced Raman scattering in this scheme. Instead of an absolute enhancement factor over the baseline (unenhanced case) which involves additional calibration of analyte concentration, a relative enhancement ratio between the two SERS cases is evaluated. The band at 1648 cm −1 , the aromatic C–C stretching vibration mode, is selected for quantitative comparison.…”

“…In the previous reports, 3D plasmonic surfaces deposited on nanostructured scaffolds such as ZnO nanoforests have been proposed and demonstrated with great potentials for SERS application owing to the largely increased sensing area and increased interaction of neighboring metal nanoparticles. In our scheme, the surface morphology on top of a microsphere is comparable to the one of a deposited flat layer, which does not lead to an increased amount of analyte compared with a flat substrate.…”

“…bottom-up) to fabricate Mie scatterers for solar cells need to be explored. Although wet chemical techniques are used to fabricate Mie scattering structures (Araújo A. et al, 2017;Karg M. et al, 2015), more industrially compatible techniques are desirable. A recent work by (Giannakoudakis and Di Vece, 2017) shows that TiO 2 Mie scatterers can be produced with a gas aggregation cluster source and combined with a-Si thin films.…”
