Direct GC determination of methylmercury chloride on HBr-methanol-treated capillary columns

Abstract: SummaryGas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD) for the analysis of methylmercury chloride (MMC) using a packed column and a capillary column has been investigated. The columns were 2 % silicone OV-227 Uniport HP glass column and a DB-17 capillary column, each pretreated by about ten injections of HBrmethanol solution. MMC was separated as a sharp peak by the HBr-teated column and determined directly by ECD without derivatisation. The mass spectrum of MMC indicated that halide exchange from … Show more

“…The addition of KBr was found to lead to an increase of the retention times and peak intensity in HPLC (Schickling and Broekaert, 1995). Also in GC, the derivatization of methyl mercury by reaction with HBr (Mizuishi et al, 1997) or Kl (Kato et al, 1992;Barshick et al, 1999;Lansens et al, 1990) is well established prior to chromatography of mercury compounds on polar columns. The bromides formed were further stabilized by adding HBr to the carrier gas.…”

“…5 Figure 6 shows the chromatograms of methylmercury chloride separated by the capillary column which was treated with methanolic HBr. 70 The authors 71 also used NICI-MS as a highly selective and sensitive method for organotin halides. Using the doping technique and GC-NICI-MS, were studied the direct and sensitive determination of traces of TBT and TPhT halides.…”
