Direct Electrodeposition of Copper Ladder Structures on a Silicon Substrate

Abstract: We report a copper electrodeposition with a microscopic structure of a regular ladder pattern on a silicon substrate where the ladder formation and evolution can be controlled by varying the electric field intensity during the electrodeposition. The deposit morphology varies from a periodic square-island structure to a ladder structure when the applied current is changed. The formation of a ladder structure with nanoparticles is related to the periodic potential measured across the electrodes. This method prov… Show more

“…In the electrodeposition system, transport of the radionuclides to or from an electrode occurs by diffusion (molecular motion under a concentration gradient), convection (molecular motion imposed by bulk motion of the medium, e.g., vibrations or stirring) and migration (molecular motion under an electric gradient) [77][78][79]. In Hanson's theory, the electrodedeposition mechanism is described using the 'hydroxyl layer' formation [19].…”

“…Moreover, electrodeposition is unique because the driving force of the reaction is precisely known and controllable. Electrodeposition is capable of fabricating many regular and novel nano-and microstructures [22][23][24][25] that cannot be prepared with other traditional techniques. Although ZnSe and Zn nanostructures have been electrodeposited respectively, 26,27 quasi-one-dimensional bamboo-like ZnSe/Zn heterostructure ordered array have not yet been reported.…”

“…Islands formed in electrodeposition have attracted researchers owing to their scientific interests and technological importance [1][2][3][4][5]. Islands formed by aggregation of adatoms on a substrate affect the physical properties of the thin film because the islands that develop with time become the grains of which the thin film consists.…”
