Direct driven wind energy conversion system connected to load using variable frequency transformer

Abstract: This paper proposes a variable frequency transformer for wind energy conversion systems using permanent magnet synchronous generator. It is a doubled-fed wound round induction machine which transfers the power between asynchronous networks. Typical permanent magnet synchronous generator-based wind energy conversion systems with back-to-back converters produces harmonics which creates power quality problems. The above problem can be overcome using the variable frequency transformer between permanent magnet synch… Show more

“…The manufactures choose wind turbine system with variable speed control over wind turbine system with fixed speed because of its limitations. The turbine with variable speed control generators are either Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) or Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) as in Vijayalakshmi et al 1 The merit such as high power density/volume ratio, reliability and smaller size makes the PMSG as an appropriate solution for the wind energy conversion system as in Yuvaraja and Ramesh Kumar. 2 Then, if wind characteristics obtained is high and steady, wind turbines with fixed speed control are generally used.…”
