Direct Dark Matter Searches - UKDMC

Abstract: Three new direct dark matter detection experiments are nearing operations within our collaboration. DRIFT II is a next generation modular gas time projection chamber designed to demonstrate directionality with a scalable technology. The first module of this is operational in our underground laboratory at Boulby. ZEPLINs II and III are next generation liquid time projection chambers offering simultaneous measurement of scintillation and charge from liquid xenon. These two instruments will provide sensitivities … Show more

“…Many experiments involving a variety of nuclei have been set up or are being planned. Detectors made of heavy nuclei (for example Germanium or Xenon) currently in operation include Edelweiss [15], DAMA [16], CDMS [17], Xenon [18], Zeplin [20], Warp [21] and KIMS [22]. Upgrades and new projects such as Genius, Xmass [23], CLEAN [24], ArDM [25] and Eureca [26] have been proposed as well.…”

“…On the other hand, spin-dependent interactions are for the nuclei with unpaired nucleon that gives rise to non-zero ground state spin. The experiments such as Edelweiss [41], DAMA/NaI , CDMS SuperCDMS [42], Xenon10 [36], Xenon100 [37], Zeplin [43,44], KIMS [45], CoGeNT [46] are using detectors made of heavy nuclei (Ge or Xe) to search scalar interactions. On the other hand, NAIAD [47], SIMPLE [48], PICASSO, Tokyo/NaF [49] are using light nuclei to detect spin-dependent case.…”

“…Direct detection experiments such as Edelweiss [16], DAMA [17], CDMS [18,20], Xenon [19,21], Zeplin [22] or Cogent [23] measure the recoil energy of the nuclei that would result from an elastic DM -nucleus collision in a large detector. To reduce the cosmic rays background such detectors are located deep underground.…”
