Direct Costs of Hip Fractures in Patients Over 60 Years of Age in Belgium

Abstract: With a total cost (acute hospital and outpatient costs) of BeF4,667,894,950 ($US126,159,323) per year in Belgium, proximal femoral neck fracture should be considered a major health economic problem and appropriate measures to prevent this disease should be rapidly undertaken.

“…Several studies have compared medical expenses before and after a hip fracture (Brainsky et al 1997, Zethraeus et al 1997, De Laet et al 1999, Reginster et al 1999) and have found increases in costs of USD 10,000-20,000 during the first year after the fracture.…”

“…Previous studies have estimated reduction in costs and/or quality of life related to osteoporotic fractures (Liljegren et al 1997, Zethraeus et al 1997, Dolan and Torgerson 1998, Zethraeus and Gerdtham 1998, Reginster et al 1999, Haentjens et al 2001, Koeck et al 2001, Wiktorowicz et al 2001, Gabriel et al 2002, Wong et al 2002, Nurmi et al 2003, Lippuner et al 2005), but only a few of them are appropriate for use in economic evaluations and only one of them investigated the longterm consequences of fragility fractures (De Laet et al 1999). Not surprisingly, it is the hip frac-ture-the type of fracture associated with the highest mortality and most severe morbidity-that has been investigated most frequently in these studies.…”
