“…The data on the distribution of the various worm species in the positive dogs indicate that representatives of Ancylostoma genus were the most common parasites in Sofia district, recovered from 52.5% of dogs while Trichuris vulpis was more common in the Pleven district -20%. Some species of genera Trichuris and Dipylidium detected in the samples are known as agents for diseases in humans and animals (Martı-nez-Carrasco et al, 2007;García-Agudo et al, 2014;Kantere et al, 2014). The established gastrointestinal parasite status of stray dogs in the investigated districts in Bulgaria is similar with the one obtained for the dogs in neighbouring countries -Greece (Kantere et al, 2014) as well as in distant places like Spain (García-Agudo et al, 2014).…”

“…The patients with dipylidiasis are often asymptomatic but symptoms, such as anal pruritus, diarrhea, mild abdominal pain (usually epigastric pain), decrease in appetite, indigestion, and gastrointestinal tract disturbances, may be seen [8,9]. Occasionally, urticaria, eosinophilia, psychologic irritability, slight reduction in weight gain, and intestinal obstruction has also been described [10].…”

“…This parasite is transmitted through the ingestion of the intermediate host fleas of dogs (Ctenocephalides canis) or cats (Ctenocephalides felis) which carry the larval forms (Craig and Ito 2007). Humans become infected by accidental ingestion of the infected fleas and in major cases, it mainly occurs in young children due to their playing habits and living in close proximity to infected dogs or cats (Chappell et al 1990;Garc ıa-Agudo et al 2014;Jiang et al 2017). Since first described in 1758, D. caninum infection or dipylidiasis has been recorded in at least 23 countries including USA, China, Japan, Italy, Chile, India, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, Sri Lanka, Uruguay, Argentine, Australia, Bulgaria, Cuba, Germany, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, and UK (Jiang et al 2017).…”
