Dipolar Excitation in the Third Stability Region

Abstract: Dipole resonant excitation of ions creates instability bands which follow iso-β lines where β is the characteristic exponent (stability parameter). Instability bands are exited most effectively on the fundamental frequency π= βΩ/2. Here π is the angle resonance frequency of the dipolar voltage applied to x or y pair rods of the analyzer, and Ω is the angle frequency of the main drive voltage. Our goal is to study the mass peak shape in the third stability region with dipolar resonance excitation of the instabi… Show more

“…5,15 Dipole resonant excitation on small frequencies leads to the appearance of instability bands on the (a, q) stability diagram along iso-b lines. [16][17][18] With linear quadrupoles, an instability band along x ¼ const line is formed when a small dipole rf auxiliary voltage is applied between the X pair of electrodes and y ¼ const with dipole excitation between the Y rods. These instability bands together with the general stability diagram allow the QMF transmission to be increased for the same resolution value.…”

“…The study shows that strong dipole resonances occur at frequencies 0.25em ω = β Ω / 2, where β = 0,1, 2 … are the boundary values of the parameter β for the joint stability zones of the Mathieu equation. 15,17 The dipole excitation along the stability diagram boundaries creates instability bands. The width of an instability band increases nonlinearly with the increase of the dipole potential amplitude.…”

“…The possibility of using additional DE for mass analysis of the linear quadrupole is considered in. [51][52][53][54][55][56][57] The QMF with DE is described in the patent [(a)]. The idea of the method is to change the stability boundaries of the first region by removing the stable boundary by DE.…”
