Diphenylpyrimidinone–salicylideneamine – new ESIPT based AIEgens with applications in latent fingerprinting

Abstract

Green fluorescent aggregates of diphenylpyrimidinone–salicylideneamine show AIE + ESIPT in 99% H2O:CH3CN for the visualization of fingerprints on aluminium, steel, glass, ceramic tile and metal coin surfaces.

“…Diphenylpyrimidinone 4 on reaction with salicylaldehyde, 2‐pyridinealdehyde and benzaldehyde in CH 2 Cl 2 in the presence of catalytic amount of p ‐toluenesulfonic acid gave AIEgen 1 and derivatives 2 and 3, respectively (Figure 1 and Figure S1‐3 in the Supporting Information).The design of AIEgen 1 involves ESIPT mechanism, where on photoexcitation, the enol form can be transformed to keto form through excited state proton transfer from oxygen to nitrogen . In CH 3 CN, AIEgen 1 shows absorption maxima at 400 nm due to azomethine (‐C=N‐) group transition and reveals non‐fluorescent behaviour, on excitation at 390 nm which could be attributed to the dissipation of excited state energy in non‐radiative manner.…”
