“…Di’ao Xinxuekang (DXXK) capsule is the rhizome extract of Dioscorea nipponica Makino and Dioscorea panthaica Prain et Burk and contains dioscin, diosgenin and other steroidal saponins. DXXK is used to prevent and treat coronary heart disease and other associated coronary artery diseases (CADs) ( Qu et al, 2018 ; Li et al, 2021b ). In Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, it has the effects of promoting blood circulation, and removing blood stasis which might explain its therapeutic effect in CADs.…”

“…Specifically, diosgenin exhibited neuroprotective role in a hyperglycemia-induced cerebral ischemia zebrafish model by reducing oxidative damage and inflammation (Oyelaja-Akinsipo et al, 2020). In addition, previous study showed that dioscin and diosgenin treatments alleviated cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury in rats and reduced the levels of multiple proinflammatory cytokines (Li et al, 2021a). Based on these results, we could confirm that TSTT promoted repair of axonal injury and motor functional recovery following ischemic stroke, may be due to these two kinds of steroidal saponins.…”

“…Dioscin‐containing “Di‐Ao‐Xin‐Xue‐Kang” capsules have been employed to treat cardiovascular disease for as long as 20 years in China; the rhizomes of D. zingiberensis C. H. Wright are used as the medicinal component in these tablets, 3 whereas the dioscin‐containing DA‐9801 completed phase II clinical trials for treating diabetic neuropathy in the United States in 2015 106 . Dioscin (along with its glycone derivative, diosgenin) derived from D. nipponica and D. panthaica Prain et Burk were used as the active ingredients of traditional herbal medicinal products for coronary heart disease (CHD) in the former Soviet Union and China since the 1960s 107 . In 2002, Cai et al 108 demonstrated the proapoptotic, antitumor cellular mechanisms of dioscin that was purified from the root of Polygonatum zanlanscianense Pamp., which induced cell death of tumor cells with a half‐maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) of 4.4 μM.…”
