DiOS -- An Extended Reality Operating System for the Metaverse

Abstract: Driven by the recent improvements in device and networks capabilities, Extended Reality (XR) is becoming more pervasive; industry and academia alike envision ambitious projects such as the metaverse. However, XR is still limited by the current architecture of mobile systems. This paper makes the case for an XR-specific operating system (XROS). Such an XROS integrates hardware-support, computer vision algorithms, and XR-specific networking as the primitives supporting XR technology. These primitives represent t… Show more

“…Hence, the paper proposes a novel operating system architecture for the XR platform that addresses the current XR operating system's limitations. The system supports fine-grained integration of digital content and environments, standardized interaction across applications, multiuser experiences, and hybrid working modes when using XR devices to access virtual spaces at an urban scale [28].…”

“…XR is still being improved and bettered as a result of many advances in hardware and the increase in network effectiveness that 5G brings. While XR performance continues to improve, there are still some challenges to overcome; for example, the camera on a mobile phone can only be used for one operation at a time, which prevents the integration of multiple applications into a hybrid physical-digital environment [27].…”
