A spatial turn is increasingly being recognised across education, the humanities, and social sciences to critique Western Cartesian assumptions treating space as either empty or a diametric opposition bringing dualistic splits between reason/emotion and mind/body. Bacon’s vision of human subjugation of nature as a tool for human progress is examined as a diametric spatial projection, where humans are above and apart from nature, in a mirror-image inverted symmetry of above/below hierarchy and side-by-side assumed separation as diametric space. Building on an interdisciplinary synthesis between an aspect of the structural anthropology of Lévi-Strauss, De Beauvoir’s othering, and Bronfenbrenner’s social-ecological systems in psychology, allied with a Heideggerian critique of being as needing a mode of ‘being alongside the world’, a shift in experiential and conceptual space is proposed in this conceptual review article for education. This shift is towards a framework of concentric spatial systems of sustainability. Concentric relational spaces of assumed connection and relative openness and away from diametric spaces of splitting and closure have been developed recently for sustainability concerns regarding inclusion in education. This article goes further to interrogate systems of concentric relational space for belonging with and encountering the natural world for environmental sustainability.

Wine and Ecstasy in Black and Red. Attic vases with Dionysos and Meanads in Norwegian collections. Depictions of Dionysus and his followers the Meanads are the most common images used in Greek Attic vase paintings. Wine-drinking is seen in relationship with the ecstasy of the Maenads and as part of becoming ecstatic. New theoretical perspectives give a fresh understanding of these scenes - suggesting that they portrayed and played an important role in Dionysian ritual and ecstasy. The Meanads achieved ecstasy by drinking wine, seen as a metaphor of the wine god Dionysus, and thus become a part of the god in moments of ecstasy. According to Van Gennep´s rites de passage, the liminal phase was an essential part of religious rituals, and the article concludes that it is the liminal phase of reaching a higher level - being at one with the divine - that is depicted in the selected vases. It is also suggested that, while drunk, the men of the symposium felt the same connection with the divine as the Maenads did during their ecstatic experiences. Ethnographic parallels show how these rituals were carried out, and indicate the symbolic role of Maenads in the rituals of the symposium. Pieces from Norwegian collections are revealed as relevant and representative examples of Dionysian iconography.

All occasions during which ancient Greek lyric was performed, were originally and intrinsically embedded in religious ceremony, but certain lyric forms were addressed more directly to some divine being in whose honour the ceremony was being performed. The spatial context of this kind of lyric performance was mostly a public gathering of officials and populace, and the content (references to ritual and myth), form and manner of performance (generally choral odes performed by a chorus of singer-dancers, accompanied by an ensemble of flutes and/or lyres, and percussion instruments) reflect this more ‘religious' and public nature. This broad characterisation cannot, however, be applied rigidly and consistently to the surviving poetic texts.
