Diode-pumped mode-locked Yb:YCOB laser generating 35 fs pulses

Abstract: Direct sub-50-fs pulse generation is demonstrated with a mode-locked Yb:YCa4O(BO3)3 laser. With external compression, pulses as short as 35 fs are generated at 1055 nm. The oscillator operating at a repetition rate of 95 MHz is pumped by a two-section distributed Bragg reflector tapered diode laser and mode locked by a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror. The onset of self-Raman-conversion for pulse spectral bandwidths exceeding 40 nm (FWHM) is observed.

“…A comparison of performance of the diode-pumped Yblasers in the sub-100 fs regime is shown in Figure 3. As can be seen, the generated 56 fs pulses with 450 kW of peak power in our work demonstrate more than one order of magnitude higher average and peak powers when compared to the previous sub-60 fs diode-pumped Yb-lasers [37][38][39][40][41][42]. We believe that such a powerful ultrashort pulse laser source will be attractive for nonlinear frequency conversion into the visible and near-infrared ranges [43][44][45].…”

“…In addition, the large lower-level splitting results in a broad emission bandwidth, which is beneficial to generate ultrashort pulses by various mode-locking techniques. Until now, a number of Yb 3+ -doped laser materials have been developed to generate femtosecond pulses [3][4][5][6][7]. The shortest pulse duration reported thus far was 32 fs in a Yb:CaGdAlO4 oscillator optically pumped by a fiber laser [8].…”

“…During the past few decades, the trivalent ytterbium (Yb 3+ ) ion has been recognized as one of the most important doping ions for diode-pumped lasers, especially in the ultrashort pulse laser fields [1][2][3][4]. The simple electronic energy levels of Yb 3+ ion are beneficial to eliminate the undesired effects, such as up-conversion, excitedstate absorption, cross-relaxation process and concentration quenching.…”
